It is a great pleasure to inaugurate the 46th Leather Research Industry Get-to-Gether – LERIG – 2012, honour the doyens of Leather Industry, present the awards and address this distinguished gathering here today.
At the outset, I congratulate the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), the Constituent Laboratory of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi for catering to the needs of the industry and for its support to the people, artisans and others engaged directly or indirectly in leather industry in rural areas. Since its inception right from 1948, CLRI has maintained a strong academy – research – industry network. I am pleased to learn that the event is the brain child of Dr.Y.Nayudamma, a Legendary figure of Indian Leather Sector.
I am glad to note that the CSIR-CLRI and the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) have joined hands in true spirit of Team India and have jointly undertaken the responsibility of empowering the Leather Industry in Ethiopia. This is also reflective of the wishes of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Ethiopia and the aspirations of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Dr.Manmohan Singh. This is indeed a symbol of cooperation between the developing countries. The presence of all in such large numbers is ample testimony of the “Team Spirit” and this augurs well for the sustained growth and progress of the Indian Leather Industry. I congratulate all of you in this regard.
No doubt, the Indian Leather Industry has scaled new heights with exports target set USD 14 billion by the end of the 12th Plan period and hand holding them in this journey is the Council for Leather Exports (CLE), which has charted the growth path of the Indian Leather industry, through its ceaseless efforts in diverse areas such as export promotion, market diversification, information dissemination and infrastructure development. I congratulate the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) for ably laying out the road map for the growth of the Indian Leather Sector over the past twenty five years and for efficiently piloting the Indian Leather Industry to global prominence.
International Trade is not only full of complexities, challenges, risks & Uncertainities but is a world of opportunities as well. Maintaining a very high degree of competitiveness, quality and service at all levels is a pre-requisite for any company to stay afloat in international trade. Industrial sectors should make strategies at the right time to become global leaders. The Leather Sector offers ample opportunities for Leadership with India enjoying a natural endowment by way of raw hides and skins. We have the well developed technology and expertise base with vast human capital and market credibility. India is one of the largest employment providers and is a leader in fashion forecasting in leather colours. India has the capability and capacity to increase her share in global trade and facilitate gender and social empowerment by leveraging technology tools through planned development of sector. The efforts taken by CSIR-CLRI, her synergy partners, stake-holders and the organizers of LERIG 2012 to deliberate on the 12th plan priorities and to steer the course of the Indian leather sector are laudable.
I am confident that you will carry on the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ‘to do better than yesterday and for ever’. I am sure that with determination and joint efforts the Indian Leather Industry will certainly attain greater heights in the global arena. I convey my warm felicitations to Dr.K.V.Raghavan, Chairman, Research Council, CSIR-CLRI, Prof.Dr.A.B.Mandal, Director, CSIR-CLRI, to the delegates of LERIG 2012 and to all those who are associated with CLRI.
