ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR.K.ROSAIAH, GOVERNOR OF TAMIL NADU AT THE GOLDEN JUBILEE OF NATIONAL PHARMACY WEEK CELEBRATIONS ORGANISED BY INDIAN PHARMACEUTICAL ASSOCIATION AT RAJA ANNAMALAI MANDRAM, CHENNAI ON 26.11.2011 AT 5.30 P.M.

It is a pleasure to participate in the National Pharmacy Week Celebrations organized by the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), present the Best Pharmacist Award, M.Pharm Synopsis Award and address the distinguished gathering here this evening. At the outset, I congratulate the IPA on its Golden Jubilee Celebration. Celebration of Silver Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee or a Centenary for any organization, that too for an association is a remarkable achievement.

It is a matter of great pride to know that The Indian Pharmaceutical Sector is emerging as one of the major contributors to Indian exports.  I am told that the Indian Domestic Pharmaceutical market size is estimated to grow to a compounded annual growth rate of 9.5% till 2015. Currently the Indian pharmaceutical industry is one of the world’s largest and most developed, ranking 4th in terms of volume and 13th in value terms.  We account for 8 percent of global production and 2 percent of world markets in pharmaceuticals.

Today India is acknowledged as one of the leading nations in the global pharmaceutical industry.  The sophisticated capabilities, disciplined & dedicated approach, manufacturing excellence and skilled manpower and cost effectiveness have made India an attractive destination for starting new pharmaceutical industries.

With Low Cost innovation, low capital requirements, cost effective, running facilities, well established manufacturing processes & R & D Infrastructure  India is destined to emerge as an alternative source for affordable medicines.  We need to look at pharmaceutical sector as a strategic and flagship industry.

Priority areas for Indian pharmaceutical R & D have to be identified; India’s expertise in developing new and innovative processes for known molecules needs to be explored.  Initiation of new drug development for diseases of relevance to the Indian Population is imperative.  Evolving new regulatory measures to address the emerging concerns of the industry in its multifaceted dimension is necessary.

Even though we have achieved a distinct place in globe in the pharmaceutical field, yet we have a lot to achieve.  Harnessing the potential of the members of the Indian pharmaceutical fraternity is the need of the hour.  It is befitting that this year’s theme at the National Pharmacy week is “Pharmacist : A Health care Professional”.

We need to bring in awareness among the people at large, the authorities, stakeholders – the pharmacists, pharmacy colleges & students, Chemists & Druggists on the role and responsibilities of the pharmacist as a health care professional.  We need a joint and concerted effort to generate a widespread awareness and to educate the public about the pharmacist and to rekindle in the pharmacy professionals the spirit of service and their role in creating a healthier nation.I am sure that the National Pharmacy Week Celebrations would sensitize the pharmacist on their duty towards the society and the people.

We need to lead the pharmacist to the main stream.  They should be the core member in the team towards Health care.  The members and stakeholders of the Pharmaceutical Industry should be more service oriented.  The pharmacists should provide patient oriented services and ensure safe and caution on their adverse reactions; they should identify and help to bring to book those illegal and fraudulent people who bring a bad name to the pharmaceutical industry.

I am sure that with the sincere and dedicated efforts of the members of the Indian pharmaceutical fraternity we can take Indian Pharmaceutical Industry to greater heights. I convey my warm felicitations to Thiru R.Narayanaswamy, President, Thiru J.Jayaseelan, Secretary, to the office bearers and the members of the IPA.

I wish the National Pharmacy Week and the IPA Golden Jubilee Celebrations all success.

Jai Hind.
