ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR.K.ROSAIAH, GOVERNOR OF TAMIL NADU AT THE NATIONAL PHARMACY WEEK CELEBRATION – 2011 AT THE TAMIL NADU  DR.MGR MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, CHENNAI  ON  25.11.2011 AT 6.00 P.M.

It is a great pleasure to participate in the National Pharmacy Week Celebrations, present the Life Time Achievement, Best Doctor & Best Teachers Awards and address this distinguished gathering here today. Celebration of an occasion for a week in general signifies our efforts to reinforce the duties and the commitment that have to be made to take forward our mission to reach the goal.

We celebrate the Communal Harmony Week, the National Pharmacy Week and the like.  They may be of different fields; but each one of us have a duty.  As a citizen we owe a lot for the peace and prosperity and for the growth and development of our nation.  Similarly the Pharmacists & Technicians have a significant role to play.  The National Pharmacy system not only acknowledges the invaluable contributions made by the Pharmacists, but also underlines the need to enhance their contributions towards improvising patient care in our nation’s health care institutions.

It is an ideal time for pharmacy departments to acknowledge and celebrate their achievements in ensuring effective medication use in their institutions and to share those accomplishments with patients, other health professionals and the community.  In this regard, The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University, Chennai has been a great contributor to our nation’s development.

As one of the prime contributors to Health Care the Pharmacy Department has an onerous responsibility to ensure safe and quality drugs leaving no room to spurious drugs. For the past 49 years, the National Pharmacy Week is celebrated every year in India, in the 3rd week of November.  The purpose of the National Pharmacy Week is to bring awareness amongst the people about the role of the Pharmacist in health care and to promote the pharmacy profession.  Last year’s theme was “As Your Pharmacist”.  It laid emphasis on pharmacist’s vital role in helping people to make the best use of medicines and to raise public awareness on emerging public health services.

The call for improved “Global Health Governance” is gaining importance in today’s era of globalization due to the global environmental changes that have caused an increasing concern towards health.  The Indian healthcare industry is growing at a rapid pace and is expected to become a US$ 280 billion industry by 2020.

In India health care infrastructure has made rapid progress. Yet we have to improvise its quality, enhance its technology and provide health care system on par with international standards.  India has a largest health care infrastructure; today, the total value of the sector translates to about 6% of GDP.  India’s Healthcare Sector includes retail pharmaceutical, health care services, medical & diagnostic equipment manufacturers and suppliers.

Pharmacists are key contributors towards improving the health of the people.  The pharmacists are expected to use their knowledge and expertise to educate the public regarding rationale drug use, prevention of communicable diseases, methods of family planning and importance of good health.  The changing role of pharmacist towards health care includes Drug Information Services, Patient counseling, Drug interaction and Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring.

It is a career with a blend of science, healthcare, patient care, computer technology and business. The importance of commemorating National Pharmacy Week lies in recognizing the value of Pharmacists in ensuring safe and effective use of medicines and the vital role they play as professionals in the healthcare team.  The Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the National Pharmacy Week is held across the country from November 20-27, 2011.

We need a sincere and dedicated effort from all from each and every sphere to promote awareness among the people and public and stakeholders on their prime role in the building up of our nation.  I am sure that this National Pharmacy Week Celebrations will spread the message “Pharmacist: A Health Care Professional” and the need for Pharmacist active and sincere role and support for providing a quality health care.

The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University’s initiative to provide utmost priority for better practice of health sciences and in imparting quality education deserves appreciation.

I convey my warm felicitations to Dr.Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, Vice-Chancellor, to the members of the Pharmaceutical Fraternity, to the recipients of Life Time Achievement, Best Doctor and Best Teacher awards.

I wish the National Pharmacy Week celebrations all success.

Jai Hind.
