ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR.K.ROSAIAH, GOVERNOR OF TAMIL NADU AT THE EID MILAN PARTY ORGANISED BY THE COMMITTEE OF HOSTS AT CHENNAI ON 11.09.2011 AT 7.00 P.M.

At the outset, I congratulate the Convener and members of the Committee of Hosts for their initiatives and for joining hands to promote the spirit of mutual respect, understanding and brotherhood among people for the past 37 years through the Eid Milan Party celebrations.  It is indeed a welcoming and a good and thoughtful interfaith celebration organized to coincide the completion of Ramzan fast.

Prophet said “Fasting is one half of endurance and endurance is one half of faith”.  Observing fast in the holy month of Ramzan contributes to strengthening of character and discipline.  It nurtures the qualities of sacrifice, self discipline and promotes the spirit of compassion, love and brotherhood.

It is befitting that this Eid Milan party is hosted by a Committee comprising of eminent elders from educational, industries and social organizations to honour non-Muslim brethren.

The essence of Islam lies in the moral character it tries to infuse in the individuals daily life.  The unity of men is the primary aim of religion.  The great Prophets of all religions and great people, have laid emphasis on the ideals of unity, compassion and love.

Quran (49:13) emphasis the need of best conduct.  It says, “O mankind! Indeed, we have created you male and female and have made you nations and tribes that you may know one another.  Indeed the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct”.  Islam dwells on the need for unity in humanity and the centrality of moral conduct.

A famous Sanskrit verse says, “To the large hearted, all men are brothers in blood”.  Jesus Christ’s message to the world was love, compassion and to treat all as thy brethren.  Religions may be different but the path is one said Guru Nanak.  The basic tenets of all religions underline unity, peace and brotherhood.

Mahatma Gandhiji, the father of our nation said, “The golden way is to be friends with the world and to regard the whole human family like members of one family.  He who distinguishes between one’s family and another’s mis-educates the members of his own and opens the way for discord and irreligion”.

Religious unity or oneness means unity among all people, people of all communities.  We should consider India as our home irrespective of the faiths which we belong and join hands to strengthen the bonds of unity and harmony.

I congratulate Dr.Khadri, the Convener and the Committee of Hosts for organizing such programmes and for coming forward to support the social service activities and projects of NGOs by donating liberally. I am pleased to present the cheques to Charitable Hindu, Muslim and Christian organizations.

I convey my warm felicitations to Dr.S.K.Khadri, Chairman, the Committee of Hosts, Ms.Jennifer Mclntyre, U.S. Consul General and Dr.Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University.

I conclude with the words of Smt.Indira Gandhi, “Whosoever tries to weaken us, puts pressure on us or is hostile to us, we shall face them unitedly, not through war, but on the basis of our strength, our stability, our unity and ideals”.

My greetings to all of you.

Jai Hind.
