ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR.K.ROSAIAH, GOVERNOR OF TAMIL NADU AT THE INAUGURATION OF COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTRE AT KMCH PREMISES, COIMBATORE ON 07.11.2011 AT 4.30 P.M.
At the outset, I congratulate the Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital, Coimbatore for coming forward to build a Comprehensive Cancer Centre at a cost of Rs.250 Crore housing 200 beds with the state of art facilities for Cancer Care and Cancer Treatment. It is a pleasure to inaugurate the Comprehensive Cancer Centre which equips the world’s most advanced PET-CT Scanner – True – Point enabled Siemens Biograph, Gamma SPECT Scan and address the distinguished gathering here this evening.
Health of its citizens is one of the prime assets of a nation. We see an upspring of health care and corporate hospitals. Coimbatore has now arisen as a health care destination next to Chennai. Accurate diagnosis, proper treatment and ultra modern labs with advanced technological equipments are imperative for providing health care and treatment on par with international standards.
India has made rapid strides in all fields. We have improved a lot in quality of life. Yet we have to achieve to make our nation a developed one. Be it in education, IT, roads, hospitals, agriculture, industry, health and medical science, we have to enhance our efficiency and competency to compete globally. The benefits and advancements in Science and Technology especially medical science should reach the poor and unreached. The State and Central Governments are giving prime attention to the health care of the people. We need a sincere and committed effort from the NGOs and private hospitals to cater fully to the health needs of the people and for providing quality health care and treatment at affordable cost.
Statistics reveal that cancer is a leading cause of death world wide, accounting for 7.6 million deaths and lung, stomach, liver, colon and breast cancer causes most of the deaths every year. It is reported that 30% of cancer deaths are due to dietary habits, obesity - high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, use of tobacco and consumption of alcohol. It is alarming to note that 70% of all cancer deaths occur in low and middle income countries. World Health Organisation projects that deaths caused due to cancer would rise to over 11 million in 2030.
World Health Report released in September 2011 states that India ranks very high among the nations where there is an increase in ‘premature deaths’ caused by Non-communicable diseases like cancer and heart ailments. It is worrying to note that about 53% of deaths occur in India due to chronic diseases.
We need to put in stern and joint efforts to create knowledge and awareness of cancers. Sensitizing the people on cancer prevention is the need of the hour. We have to work on the modalities to imbibe and apply cost-effective interventions to address cancer diseases. Increased protection against harmful ultraviolet radiation, fostering healthy eating- habits, laying stress on regular physical activity, prevention of smoking, use of tobacco and alcohol are vital.
The Specialists in the field of Oncology, Voluntary Organisations and NGOs should put in combined efforts to increase knowledge about cancer among the people and reduce its risk factors by using prevention and early detection. We need a priority intervention and should work on a comprehensive plan to prevent the occurrence of cancer in future generation. Cancer is not the end of life itself. Cancer was once a word that people were afraid to speak in public and people rarely admitted to being a cancer survivor. The view that cancer cannot be cured and the fears that have historically been attached to the disease should be uprooted. The efforts put in by KMCH to ensure that the cancer patients make a new beginning and turn a new lease of life deserve appreciation.
I congratulate Dr. Nalla Palaniswami, Chairman, Kovai Medical Center Hospital, for his initiatives to build up a Comprehensive Cancer Center with the state of Art diagnostic facilities on par with international standards. I convey my warm felicitations to Dr. Nalla Palaniswami, Chairman, Dr.Thavamani Palanisami, Vice-Chairman, the Doctors, Staff & Paramedical Staff of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of KMCH. I wish KMCH all success in its endeavours
I conclude with the words of Swami Vivekananda, “Every duty is holy and devotion to duty is the highest form of worship to God. The Medical profession is the noblest of all. And, you are blessed with an opportunity to save a life.” The people and society have the faith in you.
My greetings to all of you.
Jai Hind.
