ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR.K.ROSAIAH, GOVERNOR OF TAMIL NADU AT THE 7TH CONVOCATION OF SRM UNIVERSITY,AT SRM UNIVERSITY, CHENNAI ON 01.11.2011 AT 11.00 A.M.

It is a great pleasure to participate in the 7th Annual Convocation of SRM University, present the Doctorate to Dr. Subra Suresh, the distinguished Engineer and Professor, the Degrees and medals to the rank holders and address you all here this morning. At the outset, I congratulate Dr.Subra Suresh, Director, National Science Foundation for his contribution in the field of Science and Engineering and all the young graduants for their achievements.

In the knowledge race in this 21st century and rapid globalization, the quality of Higher education has to be enhanced on par with international standards. India has been and is a country of maximum global exchanges both in sharing and exchanging knowledge.  India is blessed with brain power and manpower.  India’s more than 70% of population is below 35 years of age.   What is worrying is that our country’s gross enrollment ratio (GER) is only around 12.4% which is much less when compared to the world’s GER of 23.2%.  Equipping our large human capital with the right skill and knowledge and maximum utilization of the human potential will make our nation a developed one.

Universities and higher educational institutions are the key to developing our future citizens.  They should be geared to play a decisive role.  They are the repositories of nation’s intellectual wealth.  Universities and educational institutions have an onerous responsibility in providing quality and knowledge based education catering to the rising expectations and emerging challenges in this changing global scenario.  Regulating and revitalizing higher education sector is the need of the hour to provide education on par with international standards.

I congratulate SRM University for working with a mission to make it a world class university.  Its initiatives to provide students a unique learning experience to empower them and to instill in them a flair for creativity and innovation deserve commendation.  The designing and launching of SRMSAT by the students of SRM University stands testimony for this.

I congratulate the students of SRM who have designed the SRMSAT, Nano-Satellite.  It is a matter of great pride not only to SRM, but also to the students’ community.  I am sure that the students of other Universities and colleges would emulate them and be innovative and creative. I am told that the SRMSAT which is built at a cost of Rs.1.5 crores would monitor Greenhouse Gasses, Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor in the tropics using a grating spectrometer and it is the first of its kind that the Nano-Satellite is launched by a private university in our country.

Sir C.V.Raman, the great scientist said, “Research is civilization and determines the economic, social and political development of a nation”.

I am happy to learn that about 34 major Research Projects with a total outlay of about Rs.2,621.34 lakhs which are funded by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, DRDO, ISRO, UNICEF, etc. are being carried out in the University.

We need to promote research in all spheres to enhance and improvise quality.  This will lead to innovation.  The nation needs more and more innovators.  The educational institutions and universities should promote research activities. The initiatives taken by the SRM’s International Advisory Board to build a stronger international dimension in curriculum, research and teaching methodology deserve appreciation.

Technical Education imparted should ensure that students develop a sense of lifelong learning and acquire self learning skills.  The students should be provided enough opportunities to enhance their knowledge.  Developing core competency, knowledge and ability in students are imperative to face the corporate world. I am pleased to learn that SRM University has entered in 78 different MOUs and agreements with the various leading universities and industries to provide quality education to its students on par with international standard.

Education is not merely acquiring knowledge.  It is also leading a true life. Our nation has great hope in the younger generation.  Character is destiny.  It is the intellectual ability and technical skills coupled with good conduct and character and sincerity and hard work that will take you to greater heights.

You should excel in all your future endeavours.  Great opportunities beacon you.  Don’t miss any opportunity or let an opportunity go by.  Set ambitions, goals and plan and work for achieving them.  Be sincere and committed to the nation.  Retain the core-values – the values of tolerance,  non-violence and compassion and the cultural strengths which have been carried on through generations.  Bring laurels to the nation and to this temple of learning and pride to your parents.

I convey my warm felicitations to Dr.T.R.Pachamuthu, Chancellor, SRM University, the Management, Vice-Chancellor, Faculty, Staff and Students of SRM University. I conclude with the words of R.W.Emerson, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave trail”.

Dear young graduants, the future is full of opportunities - opportunity to make a difference.

My greetings to all of you.

Jai Hind.
