MOTIVATE YOUNG BUDDING ARTISTS– BARNALA
Artist Raja Ravi Varma’s 162nd Birth Anniversary Celebrations was held at Raj Bhavan, Chennai today (29.04.2010). His Excellency Thiru Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamil Nadu unveiled the portrait of Artist Raja Ravi Varma. Earlier in the morning Thiru Barnala painted the ‘master stroke’ for this portrait of Raja Ravi Varma. The portrait was completed by four upcoming artists Ms.Ayesha Sandhu, N.Murugan, K.Ravi and K.Seeralan under the supervision of Dr.Sirpi N.Jayaraman, Principal, Bharathiyar Palkalai Koodam, Puducherry. This was conducted as a symbol of promoting upcoming artists and for generating artists for the future.
The Governor said that artist Raja Ravi Varma provides a vital link between the Traditional Indian Art and the contemporary between Tanjore School and the Western Academic realism.
Valli Art Gallery, Erode and Sangeetha Nataka Academy, Trissur, Kerala have conducted the Raja Ravi Varma Memorial Drawing Competitions on behalf of South Zone Cultural Centre for school students of Tamil Nadu and Kerala respectively. The Governor said that the purpose of conducting drawing and painting competitions coinciding Raja Ravi Varma’s Birthday was to motivate, encourage, identify and hone the inherent skills of the budding artists. The Governor asked the art galleries, artists, art exponents and cultural centres to take the responsibility of guiding and giving an exposure to the young budding artists. The Governor distributed shield and prizes to the winners of drawing competitions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Thiru K.V.Giridhar I.F.S., Director, South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur while welcoming said that 850 students from Tamil Nadu and Kerala participated in the drawing competition.The 162nd Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Artist Raja Ravi Varma was organised by South Zone Cultural Centre. Thiru Rameshram Mishra I.A.S., Principal Secretary to Governor and other dignitaries were present.
